Sir Shridath was secretary general of the commonwealth from 1975 to 1990 a crucial period in the history of the Commonwealth. The commonwealth membership grew from 34 countries to 40 during his tenure. He nudged the Commonwealth to address the pressing issues of the day peace and security, political, economic and social justice and human rights. The commonwealth under took work on global issues, such as the reduction of trade protectionism, addressing the vulnerability of small states and climate change. He helped the Commonwealth to evolve from the association of countries sharing a common British heritage into one with a global outlook and a forward looking agenda.

Sir Shridath put the Commonwealth at the vanguard of the international campaign against racism and guided the Commonwealth effort to help end apartheid in South Africa. In his fifteen years as Commonwealth Secretary General Sir Shridath served with distinction. It is fitting that his legacy be remembered and continued through the work of the Ramphal Centre, which you’ll hear more about later. I’m honoured to be one of the centres’ patrons and I wish it continued success".

"To celebrate the 80th birthday of a great servant of the commonwealth and a man that I regard as a close personal friend", he added "on becoming a part of the Commonwealth heads of government process in 1983, my consuming interest was to mobilize the forces of the Commonwealth towards the destruction of apartheid in South Africa. I found in Sonny a formidable and consistent ally whose role in that ultimately successful fight should never be forgotten. To you Sonny" he says "Sonny your record of achievement in 15 years as Secretary General is truly remarkable and I doubt will ever be surpassed" [whispers] .. [laughter] I congratulate you, I thank you for your friendship, I wish you a happy 80th birthday and many more".
